![]() ![]() ![]() To clear up any misunderstanding on the disciples’ part, Jesus tells the disciples that Lazarus has died and that his death, while evil in itself, will be used to bring about good for the disciples. As John Calvin comments, “Christ shows that he is Lord of death, when he says, that he awakes those whom he restores to life.” But in speaking of going to wake up Lazarus, Jesus begins to show the extent of His authority. 1:23).įirst-century Jews did not expect the resurrection until the end of the age, so the disciples likely are not thinking of resurrection when Jesus speaks of going to awaken Lazarus (John 11:11). Our bodies lie in the grave after our deaths, and our spirits do not go to sleep but go to be with the Lord until the resurrection of our bodies on the last day (Phil. However, properly speaking, any “sleep” that occurs is true only of our bodies. Just as we fall into unconsciousness when we sleep, so it can appear that death brings about a kind of unconsciousness for our physical bodies. In light of the Bible’s teaching on the resurrection of the dead, sleep is an apt metaphor for death. The books of Kings and Chronicles, for example, often refer to a king’s death by saying, “He slept with his fathers” (for instance, see 1 Kings 2:10 2 Kings 8:24 2 Chron. Of course, when Jesus refers to Lazarus’ sleeping, He is using a metaphor for death drawn from the Old Testament. They are unaware, John tells us, that Jesus is talking about death, not physical rest (John 11:11–13). We know this is the case because when Jesus tells them that Lazarus has fallen asleep, the disciples respond that he will recover. They did not think that his sickness would result in his physical death. Continuing our look at the story of Lazarus and Christ’s raising him from the dead, we see in today’s passage that the disciples initially were not aware of how ill Lazarus was. ![]()

In addition to the deletion of the resuscitation tube, a size extra small (XS) was added. The resuscitation tube was eventually phased out, with the standardization of the M17A2 in 1983. While the idea of performing CPR between two masked soldiers was novel, the resuscitation tube that was issued with the M17A1 proved to be complicated and often jeopardized the integrity of the mask's airtight seal. The ability to consume liquids while wearing a gas mask soon became a standard once it was established that it could be done. The straw could be moved toward the wearer's lips via a small knob on the front of the mask (see below right). The canteen could then be inverted so that the thirsty soldier could suck water in via an angled straw on the inside of the mask. The M17A1's drinking device was a smart mechanism that allowed a canteen to be attached to a tube outside the mask. In 1966, the M17 was upgraded to the M17A1 after the addition of optical insert supports, a drinking device and a resuscitation tube. symbol molded into the front of the mask (see below left). The early version of the M17 (above left) is possibly a prototype, considering the date stamp of 1958 and the presence of the C.W.S. The first prototypes of the M17 were made in the late 1950s, and the M17 was standardized in 1959. The M17 was copied by at least 4 countries, possibly more. Despite this problem, the M17 was just as successful as it's predecessor, the M9A1. This is one of the key factors that lead to the replacing of the M17A2 series masks in the early 1990s. To swap filters the wearer had to remove the mask and perform the rather difficult and time consuming task of both extracting the spent filters and inserting fresh ones. The one major drawback however, was that the two internal filter elements were not easily exchanged in the field. This feature eliminated certain difficulties with head mobility and also enabled both right and left handed weapon sighting. However, observers have an extended view of phenomena such as Baily's beads, the Sun's chromosphere, and shadow bands. When a total solar eclipse's magnitude is 1 or just slightly above 1, the eclipse has a shorter totality and is usually visible from a smaller portion of Earth. On the other hand, phenomena such as Baily's beads, the Sun's chromosphere, and shadow bands tend to be visible only for a short time during these types of eclipses. Higher magnitudes also tend to give better views of the solar corona and of any planets or stars that may be visible.
